VisitWalesSpecial St David’s Day events

January 2016

St David's Day celebrations in Cardiff will feature a whole weekend of Welsh themed entertainment. On St David's Day itself, the National St David's Day Parade will take place in the city. A rousing mass rendition of the national anthem, Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, finishes the procession outside St David’s Hall, where visitors can enjoy a special gala concert from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in the evening. There will be Welsh performers and traditional music sessions to follow in pubs in the city centre. Visitors who aren’t planning to be in the capital can take advantage of what’s going on elsewhere; Aberystwyth, Wrexham and Llandudno all host flamboyant parades. Cadw opens heritage sites for free, 1 March

Cadw, the Welsh government’s historic environment service, is opening its sites for free on St David’s Day to encourage people to reconnect with their heritage. Visitors can explore more than 6,000 years of history across sites including the magnificent St Davids Bishop’s Palace (which stands in a grassy hollow next to purple-stoned St Davids Cathedral), Harlech Castle, Beaumaris Castle and Tintern Abbey. The Annual Pilgrims’ Walk, 1 March

The Annual Pilgrims’ Walk in St Davids, Pembrokeshire, is a procession led by St Davids Cathedral from St Non’s Chapel to witness the illumination of the St David’s Day Stone. The stone, inscribed with a verse by former Archdruid James Nicholas, is illuminated by a shaft of sunlight shining through the hole in the adjacent rock at noon on St David’s Day.  The walk culminates at Oriel y Parc, where visitors can wander around a traditional Welsh market, dance to live bands and pick up the language.
